Q14-1. Can I transfer to a different faculty?
A

No. Students are not allowed to enter a faculty/department other than one listed on the letter of acceptance.
* You can find more information from here about the academic fields of study available at Kyoto iUP. Please check carefully before applying and make sure that you apply for a faculty/department that matches your interests.
*To enter the undergraduate program, students must take and pass the Qualifying Test after completing the Preparatory Course.

Q14-2. Will you cover my expenses for travelling to Japan?
A

No. All students must cover their own travel expenses. However, "Kyoto iUP, Kyoto University - JUGAS Supplementary Scholarship" for Singaporean students sponsors a one-way economy class airline ticket from Singapore to Japan.

Q14-3. What are the average living expenses for a student in Japan ?
A

This depends on the student's expenditure on housing and food. However, according to the Study in Japan Basic Guide (produced by JASSO), the average monthly living expenses is 105,000 yen (as of 2023). This page can also be a good reference.

Q14-4. Can I work a part-time job?
A

In general, Kyoto iUP students are not allowed to work part-time jobs. However, they may be allowed to do some part-time jobs under some conditions if permitted by the Kyoto iUP Office.

Q14-5. Can I join university club or circle activities?
A

Yes. Kyoto University has many clubs and circles covering a wide range of interests, including arts, sports, and culture. You can find a list of clubs and circles here (in Japanese).

Q14-6. I feel nervous about living alone in a foreign country. Do you provide support to international students who are unfamiliar with Japan?
A

Yes. Various kinds of support are available on campus such as the support from mentors, tutors, teaching assistants, and professional advice from the International Student Counseling Office. For example, the tutors will provide you with various forms of support in getting settled in Japan, including Japanese language support. Please take a look at this page.

Q14-7. Is there any health insurance system available in Japan?
A

All persons who live in Japan for more than three months must enroll in the National Health Insurance system, which covers 70% of medical treatment costs (The person receiving treatment must pay 30% of the treatment costs).

Q14-8. How many international students attend the university? Are there any opportunities for interaction with Japanese students?
A

There are over 2,900 international students at the university. Many Kyoto iUP students join clubs and circles and make Japanese friends there. Events and workshops in our university enable students to enjoy international exchange and make new friends as well.

Q14-9. Do you have allocated spaces for worship and prayer?
A

We have several spaces for worship and prayer on campus. Also, there are several churches and mosques in Kyoto. You can refer to this page.

Q14-10. Can I enter a graduate program at Kyoto University after completing my undergraduate studies at Kyoto iUP?
A

Although you must take and pass an entrance examination for the graduate school of your choice, you can enter the graduate school if you obtain a bachelor's degree through Kyoto iUP.

Q14-11. Is there any kind of benefit for Kyoto iUP students when they continue their studies at Kyoto University's graduate school?
A

The Kyoto iUP Office actively provides Kyoto iUP students who are considering applying for graduate school with information on scholarships administered by foundations outside the university as well as ones directly awarded by Kyoto University. As for the latter, in 2023, the Kyoto University Division of Graduate Studies has launched a scholarship program for graduate school, targeting Kyoto iUP students who will graduate from the undergraduate program in March 2024 and intend to enter Kyoto University's graduate school.*
The program is very competitive, and only a small number of students are guaranteed to receive the scholarship before entering the graduate school, but with this scholarship, they can go on to the graduate school from the undergraduate course without any financial concerns.
*Please note that there is a possibility that the support details of the scholarship program may change in the future, or that the scholarship program itself may be cancelled or suspended.

Q14-13. Can I participate in an internship during my vacation period?
A

You may participate in an internship during the vacation period. However, even during vacation periods, intensive Japanese language courses are scheduled, so if you are required to participate in the courses, you should pay attention to the timing of your participation in internships.

Q14-14. Does Kyoto University offer internship opportunities?
A

At Kyoto University, the Career Support Center provides all students with information about internships and job hunting. In addition to these, the Kyoto iUP Office offers valuable internship opportunities on and off campus exclusively for Kyoto iUP students. We are working to further enhance these internship opportunities for Kyoto iUP students in the future.

Q14-15. Does Kyoto University provide any support for job-seeking?
A

Kyoto University's Career Support Center plays a central role in providing students with information about job hunting, and all students, including Kyoto iUP students, have access to this information. Also, the Kyoto iUP Office provides an opportunity for students interested in finding a job in Japan to visit professional staff members at the Career Support Center and learn directly from them about the schedule and characteristics of job hunting in Japan and the necessary preparations and strategies.

Q14-16. What are the typical career paths after graduation?
A

Most of the students are likely to stay in Japan after they graduate. Science students tend to go on to a graduate school in Japan and some students are employed by Japanese companies or foreign-affiliated companies in Japan. Kyoto iUP students have a great advantage because they can speak Japanese in addition to their own language and English.

Q14-17. Can I go study abroad on a short-term basis during the 4.5 years of the program?
A

As this program is a 4.5 year program studying at Kyoto University for international students, this program places importance on getting used to Japanese universities and studying in Japanese. Therefore, we do not encourage students to study abroad from Japan to a third country during the program.

Q14-18. Does Kyoto iUP offer individual campus tour?
A

Unfortunately, Kyoto iUP office does not provide any individual campus tours and consultations. With that being said, since our campus is open to the public, you could take a free walk through campus to feel its atmosphere. Please note that only authorized personnel are allowed to enter buildings, excluding a few buildings on campus. Please check these campus maps when you visit Kyoto University.
