Go Beyond Your Comfort Zone

We hope Kyoto iUP students, who have been making great efforts in their home countries and decided to leave their "comfort zones" to make further challenges in Japan, will not be satisfied with the status quo and aim for even greater heights.

Founder

Mr. Makoto Maki (1948-2018) was a Japanese entrepreneur who founded the computer peripheral manufacturer Buffalo Inc. and Melco Holdings Inc.

Background

Inspired by the first Japanese Nobel Prize laureate Hideki Yukawa, Mr. Makoto Maki had dreamed about studying physics at Kyoto University. Mr. Hiroyuki Maki, Makoto's son and current President and CEO of Melco Holdings Inc., fulfilled his father's dream and spent four years at Kyoto University's Faculty of Economics.
The senior Mr. Maki had strong affection towards Kyoto University and expressed his desire to assist the university's international students from all over the world. The Makoto Maki Memorial Kyoto iUP Scholarship was established to enable these "future Nobel Prize candidates" to concentrate on their studies with no financial concerns and play important roles inside and outside Japan in the future.
