Q1-1. I would like to know the features of Kyoto iUP.
A

Kyoto iUP is a 4.5-year program comprising a six-month preparatory course followed by four years of undergraduate study. Japanese language proficiency is not required at the outset, as the program provides intensive Japanese language classes. Upon graduation, students are awarded a bachelor's degree in their selected major. Please check the Program Overview of our program.

Q1-2. Is Kyoto iUP a program where you can graduate entirely in English?
A

Although no Japanese language proficiency is required at the outset, Kyoto iUP is not an English-taught program. In the first two-and-a-half years, Kyoto iUP students develop an essential understanding of core subjects in both English and Japanese, and acquire sufficient Japanese language proficiency to attend specialized lectures and pursue advanced studies in Japanese in their final two years.

Q1-3. Are there any programs that allow students to earn a bachelor's degree without learning Japanese, but only in classes conducted in English?
A

The Undergraduate School of Civil, Environmental and Resources Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering offers an international course called "Undergraduate International Course Program of Civil Engineering", which allows students to graduate without learning Japanese, but only with classes conducted in English. We offer only one program which begins in October.

Q1-6. Does the Faculty of Medicine participate in Kyoto iUP?
A

No, the Faculty of Medicine does not participate in Kyoto iUP at this moment. However, some medical-related fields could be covered in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Faculty of Science or in the Faculty of Agriculture. Please refer to the Majors and Areas of Study page for more details.

You can search for information about faculty members and researchers on the Activity Database on Education and Research website. Additionally, faculty information is often available on the websites of individual faculties or departments. You can also watch video messages from some faculty members on the Meet KU Researchers page provided by the Kyoto University Division of Graduate Studies.

Q1-9. Can I see the syllabus of classes?

For the Liberal Arts and Sciences Courses, you can find the list of liberal arts and sciences courses conducted in English here.
For the classes offered by each faculty, you can refer to the syllabus on KULASIS. Please note that class descriptions on syllabi are often written in Japanese.

Q1-10. Is a double-major system available?
A

Although Kyoto University does not have a double major system, Kyoto University traditionally places great importance on liberal arts education. Therefore, students, especially in their freshman and sophomore years, can choose classes according to their own interests and broaden their study regardless of the faculty and department they belong to. For example, Humanities students can take Natural Sciences courses, and vice versa.

The bachelor's degree that Kyoto iUP students earn is exactly the same as that earned by local Japanese students.

Q1-12. Does Kyoto iUP offer a grade skipping system?
A

Kyoto iUP does not offer any grade skipping system. As Kyoto iUP is a 4.5-year program, students are required to enroll for at least 4.5 years to complete their studies at Kyoto iUP.

No, you cannot transfer credits earned at other universities.
