Kyoto iUP Student Ms. LEE DAIN wins 2nd Place, in Winter 2024 Japanese Language Speech Contest - Semi-annual Contest Sponsored by FAST RETAILING CO., LTD. -

Kyoto iUP students Ms. LEE DAIN (1st year, Faculty of Economics), Ms. NGUYEN DO QUY LINH (1st year, Faculty of Science), and Mr. PALOMAR WESLEY GAVIN GO (1st year, Faculty of Engineering) participated in the Winter 2024 Japanese Language Speech Contest, and Ms. LEE DAIN won 2nd place. The three-day semi-annual event is sponsored by leading Japanese retail holding company FAST RETAILING CO., LTD., parent of eight apparel brands including UNIQLO.

Participants at the recent competition attended lectures about the history and management philosophy of FAST RETAILING on the first and second days. After shopping at a UNIQLO store with a lecture on store operations, participants gave speeches on a theme set by FAST RETAILING, which was "My Recommendation for FAST RETAILING" on the third day. A total of 11 international students studying in Japan participated in the contest and gave unique speeches in fluent Japanese.

All Kyoto iUP students prepared their speeches based on individual perspectives and rehearsed them several times ahead of the contest.

The speech contest was a valuable opportunity to interact with international students from other universities studying Japanese, and we hope that Kyoto iUP students will actively participate in future FAST RETAILING speech contests.

Contestant's Impression

Participating in the 2024 FAST RETAILING Speech Contest was an eye-opening experience that allowed me to broaden my perspective in not only future career paths but also perspectives on life as well. I had the chance to look into various aspects of the company on different levels. Being able to learn from and speak to people in various positions in the company was such a valuable experience that left me with countless life lessons. It was also fun drafting my ideas into words in Japanese and presenting them in front of executives of FAST RETAILING, and I was able to receive some inspiring and encouraging comments.

Participating in FAST RETAILING Speech Contest is a precious practical opportunity for me to know more about how a big enterprise operates. The knowledge gained from activities including FAST RETAILING office tour, training at a UNIQLO store, and doing speech presentation has given rise to many ideas for the speech, and more importantly, the experience helps me realize whether my proposal can be applicable in reality or not. Besides, by preparing for my own speech, as well as meeting and listening to other competitors' presentations, I have sharpened my Japanese skills and become more confident using this language.

I joined this speech contest mainly to practice public speaking in Japanese which I only have a few opportunities to do. At first, I felt I had been well-trained through speeches and presentations in high school, but I realized that I still needed to review fundamental techniques and skills in public speaking regardless of language. Through the lectures and tours, this experience also broadened my perspective of the world as a consumer. I felt that I was able to view the world from a manager's standpoint and I learned how not just a business, but a team can succeed.
