Kyoto iUP Student Ms. Montanez, Marjana Ysabella Oabel Wins 2nd Place in Winter 2022 Japanese Language Speech Contest - Semi-annual Contest Sponsored by FAST RETAILING CO., LTD. -

Kyoto iUP students Mr. Lee, Kangmin (2nd year, Faculty of Science), Mr. Yan, Peijie (1st year, Faculty of Science), and Ms. Montanez, Marjana Ysabella Oabel (1st year, Faculty of Engineering) participated in the Winter 2022 Japanese Language Speech Contest, and Ms. Montanez, Marjana Ysabella Oabel won 2nd place. The three-day semi-annual event is sponsored by leading Japanese retail holding company FAST RETAILING CO., LTD., parent of eight apparel brands including UNIQLO.

Participants at the recent competition attended lectures about the history and management philosophy of FAST RETAILING on the first and second days. After shopping at either a physical UNIQLO store or the company EC site, participants gave speeches on a theme set by FAST RETAILING, which this time was "My Recommendation for FAST RETAILING" on the third day.

All three Kyoto iUP students prepared their speeches based on individual perspectives and rehearsed them several times ahead of the contest. Second-place winner Ms. Montanez captivated the audience with her brilliant speech, which also included a skit. She introduced Ukay-Ukay, a clothing market in her home country, Philippines. She noted that Uyay-Ukay shares similarities with UNIQLO in that it offers unexpected encounters with clothing and an assortment that responds to the individuality of the buyer. She then suggested that the FAST RETAILING brand maintain a low threshold for any person and a local element, as in this beloved Filipino market.

A total of 12 international students studying in Japan participated in the contest and gave unique speeches in fluent Japanese. After each presentation, there was time to receive comments from the FAST RETAILING judges, which was a great experience for Kyoto iUP students. We believe that this speech contest is a valuable opportunity to interact with international students studying Japanese at other universities, and therefore hope that Kyoto iUP students will actively participate in future FAST RETAILING speech contests.
